Daniel and Lafayette Foster papers, 1772-1881.

Primarily correspondence between members of a Norwich, Connecticut, political family. Includes letters to Daniel Foster; letters to and from Lafayette Foster, a diary of his 1846 trip to Europe, an 1851 speech to Congress; assorted printed items, and a printed biography; letters to Joanna B. Foster and Martha Foster, first and second wives of Lafayette; autographs collected by Mrs. Foster from letters written to her husband; and newspaper articles about the Foster family and the ancestral home. Lafayette's correspondents included William H. Seward, Elihu Burritt, Edwin Stanton, Charles Sumner and Roscoe Conkling. There is only one letter from each man, leading to the supposition that these particular letters were saved by Mrs. Foster for her autograph collection.

Daniel Foster served in the Revolutionary War, serving with distinction. His son Lafyette Foster graduated from Brown University, practiced as a lawyer in Norwich, Connecticut, served in the General Assembly of the state for several years, and was elected to the United States Senate in 1854, where he served for two terms.
